Mawell powers the International Hospital Federation's benchmarking service
The IHF benchmarking system is the first solution that allows hospitals to compare their procedures, services and outcomes with each other on a regional, national, and international level. The tool is available on a subscription basis to IHF member and non-member hospitals and other hospitals and healthcare organizations worldwide.
“Until now, hospital performance has been measured for individual hospitals or for national benchmarking purposes. Systems and measures are rarely compatible and thus limit the lessons that could be learned from others,” says Per-Gunnar Svensson, the former IHF director general. “We recognized that healthcare needs to adopt a more international approach seeking out best practices. A benchmarking system that could rise to the challenge was required. Teaming up with Mawell, the company with leading edge knowledge in virtualized healthcare solutions, was natural. Together we have developed a single template of international measures allowing access to a vast range of knowledge and experience as well as wider comparison.”
“IHF is an interesting partner because of its global membership that includes organizations from different cultures with different working methods as well as technological readiness. That is why it was such a challenge to create common measurements which could genuinely lead to more efficient and effective healthcare processes and, in turn, provide healthcare professionals more time to care about their patients,” says CEO of Mawell, Tero Silvola.
The IHF Hospital Benchmarking Service is an internet-based tool utilizing a global database. It gives you the instant ability to compare services and procedures with those of other user institutions. It allows access to process maps graphically demonstrating the procedures being employed and relative costs incurred by best-in-sector performers.

“We view IHF Benchmarking as an essential new management tool keeping practitioners in touch with their own performance on a daily basis and making them part of the global healthcare community,” said Svensson.
User hospitals and healthcare facilities will remain anonymous unless they choose otherwise. The servers are protected by the same standards of encryption as those used at the highest levels of international banking. The high security applied enables the system to function in an ‘open’ Internet environment.
